Ever since the launch of Blackberry Keyboard for android we have been mighty impressed with it. We had covered Blackberry keyboard in a App of the week post previously. The app has since been updated multiple times, adding features that demanded our attention. This post is a follow up on "the most functional keyboard app for android". The following steps details how to download and use it on your device.

If it is incompatible with your android device. An app called Blackberry Manager needs to be installed first, it enables any android device, running 5.0 or higher, to download Blackberry apps, and keeps them up to date.[the developer seems to have abandoned the app]

The key features offered by Blackberry Keyboard:

  1. "Ctrl" key function
  2. Predictive text
  3. Keyboard extension like clipboard, text selection custom layout etc.
Each feature has been discussed in detail below.

"Ctrl" key function

"Ctrl" key function is performed by "?123" key on the keyboard, which enables you to perform select all, cut, copy and paste functions using the traditional shortcuts that we are accustomed to on our PCs. i.e.

"?123"+"c" - Copy
"?123"+"v" - Paste
"?123"+"s" - Play store
"?123"+"a" - Select all

How to enable Ctrl key in Blackberry keyboard

  1. Go to android settings.
  2. Tap > Language & input > BlackBerry Keyboard Settings > Advanced.
  3. Tap Physical keyboard Ctrl key, and then tap Left shift key or Right shift key.

Predictive text

The keyboard also offers a one of a kind predictive text feature is one of a kind, which allows you to flick words up to the text entry field as displayed in the illustration below, it also supports swipe typing like other keyboards, it can be changed in keyboard settings.

Keyboard extension

This bar makes it easy to quickly access dictation, emoji, text selection and clipboard from the standard keyboard. Two of the main extensions are detailed below.

Clipboard

Clipboard tab displays items you have copied like text, URL and emoji.

Text Selection

Tap the shift icon to enter selection mode, and highlight the selection. The copy icon will add it to the clipboard. Tap the overflow menu to access select all and cut.


The app also supports custom layouts enabling android device owners to reorient key positions on keyboard and replace certain unused keyboard characters with emojis of their choice.
