VLC provides an easy way to stream URL on any of your device. In this post we will detail the steps to stream a video in VLC. To stream video in chrome, you can make use of an extension named Native HLS Playback, that enables Native HLS playback in chrome.

For this tutorial we will stream the video from the url "http://184.72.239.149/vod/smil:BigBuckBunny.smil/playlist.m3u8" that we got from this post on "17 Free & Public MPEG-DASH and HLS Example Test Streams and Datasets".
The method below will work no matter which platform you install VLC on.

  1. Go to View -> Stream
  2. In the "Open Media" window that appears, navigate to "Network" tab.
  3. Paste the media URL in the network URL field.
  4. Tap on the down arrow next to "Stream" button and click on Play.
  5. Then it will take a second or two depending on your network speed, and it will start playing the video.
That's all for now!
