In today's post we will be looking at apps that allow you to "cut the cord" in India.

Remember that you will need to have an active internet connection. We currently have a BSNL FTTH 777 scheme connection and found the pre speed drop tier more than sufficient for TV browsing + Normal day-to-day usage with the TV taking up close to 5-7GB /day with daily 8-10 hours of TV.
Update(June2019): We now stream all channels at FullHD for 8-10 hours per day hence data usage per day now reaches 10GB/day.

Apps we have subscribed to: We make use of the following apps and have an active Amazon prime subscription(Got it at no extra cost using BSNL offer for plans above Rs.745/-), but other than that have no other premium service active, i.e. we are practically watching TV for free!!

In order to find any apps on your TV just say the app's highlighted name on the Voice Remote provided with the TV stick:
*Do note these apps also offer paid content, that have to be paid for in order to watch. But we never encountered the need to pay for any of the content we watched till date.
  1. YuppTV*: includes most of the news channels you find in your STB/DTH subscription and includes a handy catch up option enabling you to see stale programs for any channels upto a week after its telecast. (Works on Network Speeds from 2Mbps)
  2. Hotstar*: includes most Indian movies, serials telecasted on all Star owned channels.(Works on Network Speeds from 4Mbps)
  3. Zee5*:  includes most Indian movies, serials telecasted on all Zee owned channels.
  4. Youtube: Browse and watch videos from the vast content library of Youtube as you know it on your TV! You may need to install a browser on your TV from appstore namely Firefox/Silk browser.(Works on Network Speeds from 1Mbps)
  5. JioCinema: A film streaming service from Jio. You know the rest. I'll leave it at that.
  6. SonyLiv* includes most Indian movies, serials telecasted on all Sony owned channels.
  7. Viu.com:  Browse and watch videos from the vast content library of Viu! You wil need to install a browser on your TV from appstore namely Firefox/Silk browser and browse viu.com from it to see all indian shows and movies since the appstore app priorities only korean content for some weird reason.(Works on Network Speeds from 1Mbps)
You can always check your Internet Speed on TV using "Netspeed Test" available from Amazon Appstore. It also details the maximum video resoltion supported by your Netspeed.

JioTV app for android TV: This is rather old version of the JioTV app for android TV that is no longer available. It has a vast array of channels to browse from. You can find all available channels by browsing the JioTV app for android or IOS.

The next two apps comes preinstalled with Fire TV stick.
  1. Primevideo (Paid): Amazon's premium video service that comes free on subscribing to Amazon Prime. It includes a vast array of movies, serials including many indian classics. Its content availability is on the rise and we see this as a viable alternate to subscribing to Netflix for those users who prefer indian content.
  2. Voot: A complementary movie watching service that comes with Amazon Fire TV devices.(For some reason we can only find Hindi language movies in there)
Customer support is great on Hotstar, Prime Video.

You can make use of Justwatch to check for content available/Recently added on most of the above listed streaming platforms.

Links to any of the highlighted content can be found by a simple google search.

That's all for now!
